The view point of Porawagala close to Bandarawela town is currently building up a name among the tourists as an attractive place.Also, it’s modernly called “Axestone viewpoint”. It is the most preferable place and one and only finest place to observe the Bandarawela area that built from natural black stone. Bandarawela city is second largest town situated in the Badulla district, Uva Province. Since the town is at a high elevation (4,000 ft from sea level), the weather conditions are always human favourable within all year round.
There are some legends regarding this rock who are saying this village people. One of the most famous stories is they believe there was a golden Axe which is hidden in this rock.Another thing is, this rock can see as an Axe for far away. Sinhala definition for the Axe is “Porawa” and stone is for “Gala”. Combinations of these two words, It’s called “Porawagala”. Anyway, a lot of local and foreign visitors come here and enjoy their life with getting new experience.
In many days this place will be covered by the thick mist and little wind blow over the place, It will bring cool fantastic feeling. When you stand on this rock, you can see several popular mountains in Sri Lanka at this viewpoint. Such as Piduruthalagala which is the highest mountain in Sri Lanka, Namunukula, Haggala and Fox Hill. Also, you can see Bomburu Ella waterfall faraway. Another most important thing is you can see 3 railway stations(Bandarawela, Kinigama and HeelOya stations) with one railway tunnel. Railway track lay among the paddy fields.If you visit here early in the morning and evening you can get a better experience. Also, the most suitable period to visit Bandarawela area is January to May of the year.
