It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country. This waterfall measures approximately 25m (82 ft) in high and cascade from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But in the dry season, the flow of water reduces dramatically.
Ravana Falls is a 3-tier cascading waterfall that gushes down a rock face, creating rock pools along its path.
The first set of falls at Ravana Falls is a short 1-minute walk from the jump-off point and this is the most popular spot where the majority of tourists and locals hang out.
The falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave.
The falls are quite impressive, and you can climb over some of the rocks to get a closer look. Please take care during your visit to Ravana Falls (be safe as the rocks are slippery) and don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing. If you can make it to the top, you will never regret it!
